A systems biology approach to identifying the mechanisms of sex hormone induced thromboembolism in pre-menopausal women

Oral contraceptives were first introduced in the 1950s but despite decades of use, the exact mechanism that results in increased risk of thromboembolism in women is unknown. We are using 13C-MFA to measure the impact of estrogen and other hormone based contraceptives on the metabolism of platelets in an effort to elucidate the mechanism. In the figure here, we show changes in flux in response to activation via thrombin. Interested in reading more? Check out the paper here.
